The Welfare and Development Association (ABD in Spanish) is an NGO designated a public service by the government aimed at protecting the rights of people at risk, accompanying them in their life trajectories, and acting in the community.
ABD was born in the 1980s, when drug use and the AIDS pandemic were harming the youth population. In this context, a group of professionals and volunteers came together to provide care to consumers, their families, and their environment. Today, ABD continues to tackle inequalities and social and health vulnerability through a wide range of actions, from prevention and care services to training workshops and community empowerment projects.
ABD's social action is transversal, accompanying people and communities who live in different situations such as physical and cognitive dependency, mental, physical and emotional health problems, lack of basic goods such as work, housing or energy, gender-based violence or child abuse, the simple fact of getting older or migrating to another country, drug use, discrimination based on gender, ethnicity or origin, among others.
ABD promotes programmes designed to guarantee the people’s rights, as well as to respond to the processes that generate situations of vulnerability or social exclusion. ABD is developing more than 183 national and international programs, assisting more than 171,882 people annually.
ABD relies on an interdisciplinary team of more than 1,952 professionals specializing in different intervention areas and 652 volunteers, annually trained through the volunteer school.
ABD is structured in five main intervention areas. Each one has several services to accomplish the organization’s mission and goals:
- Drug Addiction. Makes an intervention in issues related to drug addictions and HIV/AIDS from a biopsychosocial and community perspective in the services of prevention, care and inclusion designed to meet specific people’s needs, promote social development and healthy lifestyles.
- Poverty and Inclusion. Supplies all collectives in a situation of social vulnerability or exclusion. The strategies are based on prevention, care and information with the aim of achieving social inclusion and integration. The work lines of this area are: labour inclusion, prevention of energy poverty, migration and refugees’ inclusion, interculturality and diversity mediation services, social entrepreneurship, access to housing, promotion of basic supplies, etc.
- Childhood, family and gender equality. Offers prevention, treatment and support to improve the quality of life of children, youngsters, women and families with psychosocial problems due to dysfunctional family and relationship environments, GBV or child abuse.
- Promotion of personal autonomy and dignified ageing. Takes action in services related to the elderly such as home-care support, residential care, social facilities, etc. It also manages programmes that promote awareness on intergenerational solidarity.
- Intellectual disabilities. Offers programmes related to labour inclusion, residential care, therapeutic occupations, families’ support, community-based activities, etc.
From the beginning, ABD is committed to external supervision based on the criteria of ethics, quality, efficiency and accountability. We set up several assurance systems of quality and transparency in entity management and in all our services and programmes. In 2021 ABD successfully overcame 17 external audits and since 2004 ABD’s Management System and all our services and programmes have been audited conforming to ISO Norm 9001:2008 by Bureau Veritas.
In view of the need to implement common strategies, ABD has joined the 2030 Agenda, a comprehensive and multidimensional action plan that proposes a series of Sustainable Development Goals, through which to approach the major global challenges that guide us towards the world that we want.
