A propos

Founded in 1958, the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE) performs as a global network of governmental and non-governmental organisations, which jointly generate and promote evidence-based developments in and through sport, physical education and physical activity.

Abiding by the principles of Inclusion, Reliability, Cooperation and Equality, ICSSPE capitalises on research to enhance physical activity and sport, educate for improved quality of life and health for all people, and promote policies for active lifestyles, human performance and good governance in physical activity and sport.

Alongside formal partnerships with international actors, ICSSPE’s membership includes major organisations with specific expertise in areas such as inclusion and equity, integrity and sustainability, education, sports medicine and physiology, high performance and grassroots sport, as well as physical activity. To develop solutions for the challenges sport, sport science and physical education face, ICSSPE merges forces and creates concerted actions across sectors and scientific disciplines. Various publications help spreading knowledge and expertise across the globe.

The co-operation between government authorities, civil society associations and academic institutions allows for comprehensive and informed advice to authorities from local to global levels, and has led to a variety of outputs on the education, sport development, and health agendas. Examples for ICSSPE’s engagement include the Brighton Declaration on Women and Sport (1994), the co-moderation of the Programme Committee of the International Conference of Ministers and Senior Officials Responsible for Physical Education and Sport (MINEPS) organised by UNESCO, thematic input for the UNESCO Anti-Doping Convention and for the International Charter on Physical Education, Physical Activity and Sport. ICSSPE conducted two World Summits on Physical Education and a number of Pre-Olympic Congresses. Together with the United Nations, ICSSPE organised the opening of the United Nations’ International Year of Sport and Physical Education 2005. Ever since then, Sport for Development has been a key area for ICSSPE. The organisation published several books including manuals and conducted conferences and intensive training for coaches in this exciting and growing area.
