A propos

he Slovenian National Institute of Chemistry (NIC) has 309 employees (as of 30 September 2018), of which around 266 carry out research work in 10 departments & 2 infrastructure centres; 136 of these have doctorates of science.

Basic and applied research are focused towards fields that are of long-term importance to both Slovenia and the world: biology, biotechnology, environmental protection, structural and theoretical chemistry, analytical chemistry, materials research, and chemical engineering, through which the Institute performs a world class basic research and supports the needs for technology transfer of the domestic chemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries.

The Institute offers the state-of-the-art equipment in several research topics, allowing researchers to engage in the cutting-edge research challenges at the global level. Some equipment infrastructure is the only one of its kind in Slovenia, while AR-TEM microscope (used in material science projects) and NMR spectrometer are the two largest single investments in a research equipment piece in the Southeastern Europe region. NIC has established the ties with the top global engineering research centres and universities through bilateral projects and collaborative agreements.

The work of the Institute is also aligned with the priority thematic areas of the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, Horizon 2020, which places an emphasis on genomics and biotechnology for health, nanotechnology, quality and safety of food, as well as nutrition, sustainable development, and global change. Through its basic and applied research, NIC represents one of the leading research institutions in Slovenia and also in the region.
