Dr. Manariotis research has focused on biological wastewater treatment with emphasis in the anaerobic treatment of municipal wastewaterand post treatment of anaerobic effluent. Current research areas include wastewater treatment by microalgae for biofuel production, harvesting of algal biomass, physicochemical water and wastewater treatment using novel sorbents, fate and transport of nanoparticles in soil and water, and degradation of organic contaminants by ultrasound. He has also participated in various research projects funded by EU or national ;
He has published 40 peer-reviewed articles in referred journals, 1 chapter in refereed professional book, and 60 conference proceedings ;
