Geological Institute of Romania (IGR) was founded in 1906, with the mission of a National Geological Survey and works under the coordination of the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digitization. We are performing scientific research in the fields of mineral resources, geochemistry, geophysics, soil chemistry, paleontology, structural geology, geohazard and monitoring of the environmental status.
Since 1943 Geological Institute of Romania runs a geomagnetic observatory which is an INTERMAGNET observatory -IAGA code SUA (1997) and EPOS member (2018). Our scientists are specialized in raw materials (aggregates, metallic ores, non-metallic resources, secondary resources), geochemistry (soil, water, rocks), geohazards (landslides, subsidence, complex impact of mining waste and excavation), geoinformation (mineral resources information networks, implementation of EU legislation in Romania and environmental protection.
IGR holds analytical and geophysical equipments for:
- determination of the chemical composition in bulk samples (X-ray fluorescence, Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, UV vis, IR) and in minerals (scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy and wavelength dispersive spectroscopy, RAMAN spectroscopy)
- determination of mineral phases (X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, thermal analysis)
- small-scale Earth observation (unmanned aerial vehicle, 3D terrestrial Laser Scanner, Ground penetrating RADAR)
IGR was involved in international projects dedicated to:
- Earth observation and geohazards (Digisoil, SafeLand, PanGeo, URMA)
- Raw materials and environmental protection (SARMa, SNAPSEE, ProMine, EuroGeoSource, Minventory, Minerals4EU, MAXI, SUSMIN, MINATURA, MICA, CHPM2030)
- Geothermal energy (Thermomap, GeoSEE) and land planning (ERCIP, EMODnet).
