A propos

I have been involved in built environment research and design since graduating from Washington University with a Masters in Architecture. After working as an architect in Norway, i completed a PhD in the study of the relationship between pre-historic Scandinavian architecture and the landscape environment at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in 1993, and studied with anthropologist Bror Westman, Architect and KADK Director Karen Zahle, archaeologist Kalle Soggnes and several other archaeologists. My PhD oppenents were archaeologists Bjoern Myhre and Bente Draiby.

Together with Eli Stoea, another PhD student, we put on an international conference on the 'home' in 1992 in Trondheim and I have published on the subjects of the architecture of the home and low-energy, sustainable architecture, cultural heritage and ecological design up to the present. I worked under the direction of Architect conservator Anders Haslestad at the Norwegian Office of Antiquities, Riksantikvaren, to help in documenting the work of master carpenters restoring wooden buildings from the Middle Ages and have been the PI on cultural heritage assessments of buildings for the City of Oslo, ;During 2010-2011, I was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Oslo and Akershus University College assisting developers and contractors to incorporate the Passivhaus standard into the value chain of their delivery ;Further, I am an architect in Norway and in the United States and have designed mainly housing, housing renovations, large food processing and industrial buildings, and low-energy housing for the Intertribal Council on Utility Policy for nine Great Plains tribes and a school for Native Americans on the Altiplano of Bolivia.

Together with partner Robert Conboy, out firm better, Inc. in the US is also a consultant on helping bring together developers and financiers to build low-energy/Low CO2 buildings and water infrastructure. Through our partner firm John Todd Ecological Design, we provide ecological design and ecological engineering for sustainable water flows, including agricultural wastes, municipal wastes and other challenges.

Through my design firm Photonica, I continue to design and help facilitate design charrettes and both research and general stakeholder engagement processes for organisational change and virtuous/ethical project/programme outcomes; in addition to designing buildings as a registered Architect in Norway.
