The EU is facing relevant global challenges. A document of the European Commission titled “Facing the future: time for the EU to meet global challenges” (2010) emphasises mainly three of these challenges: the need to change current ways in which essential natural resources are used; the need to anticipate and adapt to societal changes; the need for more effective and transparent governance for the EU and the world. Today there is the need of introducing these challenges in the teaching activities, opening at the same time public debates able to reach people not necessarily involved in an academic programme. Given their complexity and multi-faceted consequences, these challenges should be studied using a multidisciplinary approach. The Jean Monnet Centre (JMC) at the University of Trento is the right place in which these phenomena can be analysed. As a consequence, the JMC at the University of Trento has decided to propose new and diversified initiatives, based on a multidisciplinary approach and able to reach also people not necessarily involved in the EU studies. This will be, for example, the main purpose of the open and free online course “The EU and Global Challenges” and of the International Summer School. Moreover, events such as the Film Exhibitions and the “EU Aperitifs” will offer new opportunities of involvement of the wider public. At the academic level, the centrality of the European studies will be also recognised by promoting the Certificate in European Studies. Together with the Advanced Course “EU Project Management”, this Certificate will constitute a comparative advantage for students that will be soon looking at the job market. The International Summer School, the Seminar Series, the Working Paper Series, the Jean Monnet Fellowships will bring to Trento students and scholars from other countries. Moreover, the Scholarships Programme will allow our students to spend their first period of research abroad.
