Background and objectives
In the last few years Liceo Maffei has undergone a strong innovation process. New didactical methods have been introduced, which clearly turned it into a digital school overall recognized as a model within the Autonomous Province of Trento. At the same time Liceo Maffei has become more and more active in taking up initiatives at a European level (like EYP, by the Schwarzkopf Foundation, or DeuBATE launched within the Jean Monnet Programm). In order for this innovation process to possibly continue and lead to definitive results, the school needs to endeavour in the following :
1) raise the language awareness and the linguistic competences of the teachers;
2) raise didactical competences of the teachers towards a broader use of active methods and strategies in teaching;
3) train teachers in contents, teaching methods, testing and assessment processes applied throughout Europe;
4) network with more and more European schools for planning future collaborations.
Numbers and profile of the participants
Nine teachers have been selected for the training activity funded by Erasmusplus KA1. They are from both the Humanities and the Maths-Science area and have already started, on an individual basis, a training program in one of the relevant areas 1)-4) listed above. More exactly they have following profile:
- they have improved their knowledge of English and/or German in order to be able to teach according to the CLIL methodology in short time;
- they have applied the CLIL methodology in teaching their courses (or parts of them);
- they have trained to use and currently use ICT tools in teaching (thereby adopting appropriate testing methods);
- they have trained to apply and currently apply strategies of active didactics (Socratic Dialogue, debate, role playing, flipped classroom actions, etc.) in teaching (and have developed appropriate testing methods);
- they have experience in cooperation at the European level, having already worked with schools and institution from different EU countries.
Activities, methodology
Following training activities are planned for the staff of Liceo Maffei:
- language courses to achieve higher linguistic knowledge and competence and (possibly) get C1 level qualifications
- language courses to achieve both higher linguistic knowledge and distinguished teaching competence to implement CLIL courses;
- training courses to improve the use of strategies of active didactics (Socratic Dialogue, debate, role playing, flipped classroom actions, etc.) in teaching;
- training courses to improve the use of strategies of ICT tools in teaching.
After the conclusion of a training activity, each teacher is supposed to undertake the following actions (according to the methodology specified):
- indentifying suitable ways for innovating his/her teaching activity (this could be done by working in group with the other colleagues involved in the Erasmuplus KA1 actions, under the supervision of the Head of the school);
- implementing and monitoring identified actions (under the supervision of the Head of the school);
- exchanging views on the implemented actions and their initial outcomes with the other colleagues involved in the Erasmuplus KA1 actions by working in group with them and with the supervision of the Head of the school;
- modifying the actions implemented in the light of unexpected results (as a way of learning by doing).
Results
Expected results for the staff involved in the Erasmuplus KA1 actions are the following:
-improvement of language knowledge and skills, acquisition of new knowledge and skills in teaching through ICT and active didactics strategies;
- increased motivation to carry out changes, in spite of possible resistance, in the light of successful outcomes in other EU countries
- improvement of discussion and cooperation skills .
Expectant result for Liceo A. Maffei as a whole is that its staff in its entirety may progressively be involved in a global process of change, experimentation and innovation in didactics, activated by the teachers directly involved in the Erasmuplus KA1 activities, who should be able to act as role models for their colleagues.
The expectant result for the community, intended both as the school community and as the community as a whole (and meant at the local, national, and European level) may be described as follows. Through their actions the teachers involved in the Erasmuplus KA1 project and, more generally, Liceo Maffei in its entirety, are expected to bear witness to the real existence of a European Community of research and action, passionately engaged in innovating school education towards the achievements of better ways of teaching and higher results in learning and thus more adequately prepare the students for the challenges they will face in their various chosen futures.
This is therefore to be regarded as a long term benefit as well for all those participating in the various activities undertaken.
