Juraj Dobrila University of Pula is located in a 3000-year-old town at the south of Istria, the most developed region in Croatia which has a distinct cultural diversity due to its geographical position and historical heritage. The Istrian peninsula plunges into the Mediterranean Sea, neighbouring with Italy and serving as a link between Western and Eastern Europe, which makes it naturally open to international cooperation. This area, populated by mixed inhabitants, traditions, and cultures represents an exquisite part of European civilization and heritage. Therefore, the University covers a distinctive blend of scientific research areas particularly valuable on the local level but also beyond.
The University of Pula started its mission in 2006 and today includes entities that exist from the 1960s.
The University is organized into several constituent parts and based on the principle of integrated structure that enables a tailor-made mix of interdisciplinary topics that match different research networks and calls in H2020.
The University is made up of different Departments, Faculties and an Academy.
· The Faculty of Economics and Tourism Dr. Mijo Mirković is the largest component and was the first economics higher education institution outside our capital city, Zagreb. It includes the Centre for advanced social trends and empirical research – CASTER, as well as the well-known Economic Research open access journal, which publishes rigorous scientific papers, making a significant contribution to a variety of economics fields. It hosts international scientific conferences biannually and offers a doctoral study in social sciences (PhD in Economics). In addition, numerous extracurricular activities are organized for students.
· The Faculty of Humanities covers the entire spectrum in the fields of history, classical philology, Croatian language and literature, Italian language and literature and Japanese language and culture, in a single or double major undergraduate (BA) and graduate (MA) study programmes. It publishes the multidisciplinary journal Tabula, runs various research projects and has two research centres: the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Landscape Archaeology and the Istrian Onomastic Research Centre. In the field of humanities, there is also the Centre for Cultural and Historical Research of Socialism as a separate University unit. Two major international conferences in history and related disciplines are organised biennially: Past, Present, Future and Socialism on the Bench.
· At the Faculty of Educational Sciences, for more than half a century teachers and educators have been trained to work in primary schools and kindergartens, in both Croatian and Italian languages. Both study programmes cover interdisciplinary topics, as well as Informatics and English courses in order to equip their students with versatile skills needed in contemporary educational environment.
· The Department of Interdisciplinary, Italian and Cultural Studies offers interesting approaches to the theoretical and practical considerations on a wide range of contemporary issues and phenomena, with particular accent on tourism and its articulations. The Italian studies are completely performed in the Italian language, a singular case in Croatia. In 2017 an international conference on the topic of Images and imaginaries of Italian culture will be organized by the Department.
· The Academy of Music is quite unique because it is the only one offering the study of classical accordion in the Croatian academic circle. Besides teaching, it produces a wide range of artistic and scientific contents, concerts, artistic activities, scientific research, lectures and master classes (classical accordion, music pedagogy, soloist singing and piano).
· The Department of Natural Sciences and Health offers two undergraduate study programmes, in Marine Science and Nursing Care.
· In the field of STEM disciplines, we have recently inaugurated the Department of Information and Communication Technologies, and the study programme of Mechanical Engineering.
· Our University Library has a notable corpus of old and rare written heritage, with significant collections such as ‘Histrica’, including Flaciana and the Marine library under government patronage, that inspire perpetual curiosity in social sciences and humanities in Istria, even beyond its borders.
Striving towards research excellence, the University is focused on international networks for further development, and had been a partner in various kinds of international projects, such as Tempus, IPA, INTERREG, UKF, FP7, COST, H2020, Erasmus plus programme and Euraxess initiative following the process of HRS4R.
