Institute of Materials and Structures (IMS)

IMS is a self-supporting institute at Riga Technical University consisting of Department of Composite Materials and Structures, and Department of Building Materials and Products. IMS realises contract research and project development for industrial and governmental organisations and participates in the educational process.

Fields of Research and Development:

  • Lightweight design
  • Sandwich and laminated composites, and structures
  • Multifunctional materials
  • Passive, active and hybrid structural control
  • Vibration damping of composite materials and structures
  • Inverse problems
  • Characterisation of damage in advanced composites by NDT
  • Characterisation of composite materials properties by NDT including the viscoelastic properties of adhesives, polymers and foams in wide frequency and temperature ranges
  • Moisture-saturation of composite materials
  • Fracture analysis of laminated composites
  • Buckling and post-buckling of stiffened composite structures
  • Thermal, thermo-chemical and thermo-mechanical problems
  • Simulation of curing and pultrusion processes
  • Optimisation of composite materials, structures and technological processes
  • Testing of material properties: elastic, hysteretic and viscoelastic
  • Experimental analyses: static, dynamic, fatigue, impact, acoustic
  • Safety of building constructions
  • Modern concrete technologies
  • Industrial waste utilisation in production of building materials
