Research interest and expertise:
Synthesis and characterization of inorganic and organometallic transition metal complexes, to be used as catalysts and redox catalysts. Inorganic Electrochemistry in aqueous and non-aqueous solutions. Electrochemical, photochemical, photoelectrochemical and photophysical properties of transition metal complexes. Techniques like Cyclic Voltammetry, Square Wave Voltammetry, Polarography, Chronoamperometry, AC Impedance Spectroscopy, etc… are routinely employed. In particular, during the recent years the research line has been focused on the electrochemical and photochemical reduction of CO2.
DFT calculations of the electronic and spectroscopic properties (NMR and EPR, IR frequency, UV/Vis absorptions and fluorescence emissions) of transition metal complexes, including their excited states and their reaction mechanisms (Transition States). Periodic DFT calculations in the solid state by Quantum Espresso.
Most of my research has been directed to the syntheses, characterization, DFT calculations, photochemical and electrochemical properties of transition metal complexes. In the last five years the research has been focused on their syntheses and use as catalysts for the photochemical and electrochemical reduction of CO2.
Author or co-author of 1 monograph (Inorganic Electrochemistry, 2011, RSC) and about 95 papers published in international high-impact peer reviewed journals and more than 100 congress communications. He is also the author of a free program for electrochemical digital simulation used worldwide for both teaching and research purposes.
