The Bright English Medium School is a registered NGO operating under the MACAO organization in Sakala village, Tanzania, serving around 300 vulnerable children, and thus working to improve the here living Maasai communities through education with a nursery and primary school including a boarding section as well as an orphanage.   

The purpose of our project is to bring relief to the people by fighting against ignorance, poverty and diseases – the biggest enemies in Tanzania. The vision of the school is that through education, students and families will be inspired to attain their full potential and reach social and economic independence, even though they were never believed in, or never had these opportunities in the past.

Location

BEMS is located in Sakala Village between Loliondo and Wasso, accessible through public transport from the next bigger city around 400km away, called Arusha in the north of Tanzania. The area is surrounded by various Maasai communities and bordering the Serengeti National Park in the West, the Ngorongoro Conservation Park in the South as well as Lake Natron in the East. The Ngorongoro district is not yet fully developed, making it difficult to set up any kind of structure.

Background: Maasai communities

The ethnic group of Maasai are situated in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania, living a traditionally semi-nomadic lifestyle, strongly patriarchal in nature. Whereas their culture should be much respected, it often brings a lot of challenges for the children growing up between two totally different dimensions, the rural life full of customs and the new modernized cities. As a NGO we are committed to listen to their needs and not force a lifestyle onto them, but since more Maasai parents send their children to our school and children are actually using their opportunities, we are convinced our work will benefit both, the children as individuals and their home communities by balancing tradition and the need for education equally.

How you can help us or partner

We are more than happy to receive any kind of assistance. However, most of our problems are caused by the lack of financial support and that is why we are forced to ask for your help. Creating partnerships or sponsorships for children, financing specific projects or general donations would be much appreciated. It’s possible to donate to one specific section ( food, stationary, teacher’s salary or children’s school fees) but right now, all of the donations we are receiving are used to finish the school building which is in progress.

In addition to that, we are always looking for donors, pertners and volunteers, who can bring new innovative ideas and have the energy to pursue them. There are many things around which can be improved with a creative mindset. Especially donors, pertners or volunteers with a background in engineering for our facility projects, or with a background in financial raising funds could help us a lot.
