Goal of the project:
To enhance Korosten’s climate resilience and urban livability by implementing sustainable water management practices and green infrastructure solutions that mitigate flooding, reduce heat stress, and improve biodiversity, aligning with the objectives of the EU4ClimateResilience initiative.
Specific objectives: improving microclimatic conditions in areas of the built-up area vulnerable to overheating, preventing flooding of areas vulnerable to extreme precipitation, reducing the load on the stormwater system, reducing water consumption from the water supply network, ensuring landscaping using nature-based solutions, and disseminating experience.
Expected results
2. Increased Green Urban Areas and Biodiversity:
- Creation of 12,000-13,000 m2 of new green spaces, including revitalized parks, green roofs, and permeable parking areas.
- Establishment of green bus stops, pergolas, and gazebos to improve urban aesthetics, reduce the heat island effect, and promote biodiversity.
3. Enhanced Water Use Efficiency:
- Implementation of rainwater harvesting systems at key municipal and recreational facilities, reducing reliance on centralized water supplies by collecting 210-410 m3 of rainwater monthly
- Water savings of approximately UAH 14,700-28,700 per month due to optimized water usage for technical and irrigation needs
3. Community Awareness and Engagement:
- Increased public understanding of sustainable water management and the benefits of green infrastructure through outreach activities and visible demonstration projects.
- Promotion of community ownership of new infrastructure and green spaces to ensure long-term sustainability.
4. Replication Potential and Broader Impact:
- Creation of a replicable model for integrating green infrastructure with urban development in other districts of Korosten and similar municipalities across Ukraine.
- Contribution to the achievement of the SECAP and EU4ClimateResilience objectives by reducing heat stress.
