The intensive agriculture has generally resulted in higher productivity and the expense of decreasing levels of biodiversity, partly due to lack of incentives for farmers to safeguard biodiversity. The vulnerability of unsustainable farming system has led to drastic impacts on soil erosion/runoff, under-exploitation of natural plant diversity and agrobiodiversity (due to monocultures of a restricted number of cultivars), loss of fertility of agricultural land, soil degradation, unsustainable management of water resources (underground water overexploitation) and agro ecology contamination with synthetic fertilizers and pesticides; risking food safety and ;
