ZOR ROMANI ( FUERZA GITANA) ESTEREOTIPOS ANTIGITANOS EN EL ARTE Y LA CULTURA.
Date du début: 1 mai 2016, Date de fin: 30 sept. 2016 PROJET  TERMINÉ

The Intercultural Association Nakeramos presents the project Zor Romani Antigypsy Stereotypes in Arts and Culture, a youth exchange of 50 Roma and non-Roma people that will learn about the representations of the Roma people in Arts throughout History and in the present in Spain. The learning process will be based on the non-formal education approach and its methodology. The symbolism surrounding the Roma community in different painting, literature, music, photography and the theatre artworks has influenced the construction of self-identity of the Roma and has contributed to the maintenance of stereotypes that mainstream society has internalized about them. The general conception of Roma culture and the Roma people is linked to the historical and political conditions in the relation between the mainstream society and the ethnic and cultural minorities. Art has been the expression of different ways of understanding this relation, whether in the continuity of the stereotypes (also internalised by the Roma community) or as a form of symbolic resistance. For these reasons, we seek to raise critical awareness that challenges the static and stereotyped vision of the Roma people that has been naturalized by society. We will also analyse artworks made by Roma artists to observe how they have reacted to this stereotyped vision and the relation with the no Roma people. Through workshops, film screenings, creative reading, role playing, etc., we will observe different reactions to the dominant symbolic representation of the Roma people. The youth exchange will take place in Barcelona from the 2nd to the 9th of May 2016. During one week we will develop a series of creative activities and actions analysing well known artistic works such as Picasso's paintings or the literature of Federico Garcia Lorca, among others. The project gives the opportunity to young Roma and non Roma people to approach the world of Arts and encourage them to find creative and collective solutions to social problems that the Roma communities face regarding their identity and the mainstream stereotyped image of the Roma people. Non-formal education is a key element to empower Roma youth and to motivate them to participate and be an active part of the process of emancipation of their communities, in collaboration with the non Roma people. The participant organisations from Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Italy and Poland have been our partners for several years and are part of the International Roma Youth Network - TernYpe-, through which we have jointly participated in the Roma Genocide Remembrance Initiative, aiming to advocate for the official recognition of the 2nd of August as the Day of Commemoration of the Roma Genocide during World War II (http://2august.eu/ ).The project is an opportunity to share and to think of innovative and creative ways to combat racism and inequality. Representations of the Roma people in Arts are linked to the prevailing views in the mainstream society and the development of an individual and cultural identity. Therefore, being able to analyse it is a step forward to challenge antigypsyism and struggle for social change. We will develop educational and artistic materials, translating them into different the languages of the participating countries and in English, in order to disseminate the results and share our experiences.
