CONTEXT : Due to the growing demands of the changing political and economic climate as well as the process of globalization, the reconceptualization of the role of the teacher in the classroom is necessary. It is particularly important in the case of secondary school rich in tradition of international exchange such as II Liceum Ogólnokształcące in Poznań. Professional growth, reflection and developing teacher’s autonomy and multicultural awareness became indispensable factors contributing to the quality of education offered by our school. Therefore, participation of a group of our teachers in the workshops “Project management for cross-cultural exchange projects in Europe” is going to be a vital step in intercultural education of teachers who are going to disseminate the gained knowledge and skills among their students. AIMS OF THE PROJECT: The teachers took part in workshops on active citizenship, project management, intercultural education as well as school autonomy. The course encouraged them to communicate, share ideas and experiences with their colleagues from other countries in Europe nourishing the spirit of cooperation and solidarity between countries. Apart from developing English language skills teachers learned how to use trusted resources and to develop ICT skills by discovering the possibilities of communicating with citizens from other countries. Moreover they learned how to adopt Internet resources to their own needs. Other study areas were emphasized, such as cultural issues and multicultural competences in order to be able to fight prejudice and increase tolerance. PARTICIPANTS: The project was going to encompass twelve Foreign Language, Biology, Mathematics and Economics teachers all of which already speak English as they teach their subjects in that language. They are active participants in the life of our school community, taking care of their own development as well as development of their students (many of them win national and international subject contests. DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITIES AND PROJECT METHODOLOGY: The main components of the course was going to be lectures and workshops (including project work, discussion, sharing experiences) which developed the teachers’ autonomy and ability to carry out international cooperation. The participants shared their knowledge with other teachers in our school encouraging them to join in. RESULTS: The participants also shared their knowledge and skills either with other teachers as well as students from our school. They are now better prepared to teach tolerance and to encourage students to communicate purposefully with students in other countries. Moreover, their foreign language and communication skills were developed significantly. This type of project made us understand other nations and their problems better, therefore it made the world a better place to live for everybody.
