Project background: The specific nature of crafts professions demands teaching where theory and practice interplays and the students get to practice their problem solving skills. A society in transition needs education that evolves with the expectations on our future craftsmen. Workplace experience in another country will prepare students to face the increasing group of multicultural clients in the county of Västerbotten. Education that increases the possibilities for an international career in their chosen crafts profession is requested by our students.Project purpose: An international perspective is important when it comes to the ability to compare and reflect on matters concerning life, situation and actions in a global context and to create international solidarity. Teaching in a variety of subjects will give students knowledge of the European Union, the EU’s importance for Sweden and to prepare students for a society with increasing contacts over national and cultural boarders. That knowledge is widened through an international perspective by workplace-based learning in a European multicultural city.The group consists of ten students from the vocational programme Hairdressing, ten students from Stylist and Spa and two vocational teachers. The students attend the final year of upper secondary school at Dragonskolan, Umeå.During three weeks the students will be housed in British families while having an internship at selected salons with qualified supervisors to expand their knowledge and their attitudes towards entrepreneurship, business and innovation. The internship shall develop the students’ ability to analyse and evaluate their own work and learning as well as their ability to independently choose among techniques and materials. The international perspective shall also contribute to developing the students’ understanding and knowledge in order to be able to better approach the increasing cultural diversity within Sweden and our county Västerbotten.Dissemination of the results deriving from the project will be done through flyers, reports and different social media to demonstrate that the vocational programmes Hairdressing, Stylist and Spa offer a safe and inclusive environment where we are consistent about human equality. Press, media and social tools will be used to promote the project. We will invite our APL supervisors in the business and share the wonders of embracing the multicultural perspectives, and what knowledge our students will have obtained to enrich their future positions.Desired results: When the students become a part of the labour market they will have a higher degree of understanding and are more prepared to meet the multicultural clientele they will face in their profession. The students’ creativity, curiosity and self-confidence will have increased to such extent that they dare to try their ideas in action and believe in their ability to solve problems. The quality of the education has improved. Potential and long-term benefits: Increased motivation from the education to develop and maintain international networks. Will open up possibilities of a global career. The professional skills of both teachers and students have increased/improved.Follow up: The students’ experiences from the London internships will be shared by giving talks to lower grade students about the value of working and residing in a multi-cultural environment and the new knowledge they have attained. To reach parents and students, media will be invited to spread the possibilities for development as an individual but also as an organization by participating. in EU-programmes. Special theme-days will be arranged where the hairdressing-, stylist- and spa-students invite potential prospective customers that due to religious or cultural reasons usually cannot don´t use the range of treatment ordinarily offered at the establishments.
