Hate speech, biases in everyday communication, media and even integrated within ourselves are the main issues we are planning to address during European Voluntary Service project „Youth! Together! Now!” in Krakow, organised together with seven young Europeans. Volunteers are young persons, highly motivated to undertake voluntary service in the chosen institutions. Three of them: Patricia from Spain, Endre from Hungary and Kseniia from Ukraine will work in Primary School no 24; Arantza from Spain will work in Local Kindergarten no 92, Francisco from Portugal and Varerya from Ukraine will perform their activities in Association Krakow Talent Factory and Urska from Slovenia will perform voluntary service in Cultural Centre of KTF. They are all very open towards multiculturalism and are expressing the need to introduce dialogue both with representatives of local community and between themselves.
The project is directed to three target groups: EVS volunteers, children and youth in the host organisations and the educational staff and parents of children. The main aim of the project is to promote the idea of intercultural dialogue as a foundation for active citizenship in a multicultural Europe, and as one of the basic values associated with respect for human dignity that can ensure equal opportunities for all citizens of Europe. Volunteers’ activities will be aimed to enhance activity and interaction among children in a way to show contact with other people as more attractive and interesting than a plain, one-sided receipt of information from new media. The project will affect the development of cognitive curiosity of young people and their openness towards other cultures.
The project will allow participants to indulge in new environments while being able to experience for themselves how to build positive and long-lasting relationships in spite of communication barriers. The volunteers' role will be to support the students and staff of the institutions in the implementation of various projects and actions, to actively participate in the working life of the institutions, to interest children in new ways of spending time and encourage them to pursue their own interests. Volunteers will also develop not only their own expertise, but also stimulate creativity in children, as well as make them more sensitive to the intercultural nature of today's Europe, and from an early age instill positive values such as respect for diversity, tolerance and openness.
Volunteers will carry out a number of the own actions, starting with photographic workshops, through the organization of musical events or artistic activities adjusted to specific audiences such as children and youth. Effects projects will be presented in the form of DIY Zine - short magazine prepared by volunteers without a computer. In addition, volunteers will organize workshops on the topic of discrimination, where they will invite, in a form of video conference, activists from their own countries.
The activities of the volunteers will contribute to a significant increase in the level of knowledge of beneficiaries of the project in terms of European values, active citizenship, knowledge of cultural diversity and indispensable role of intercultural dialogue in shaping the attitudes of openness, activity and respect for human dignity. The project will affect more positive and free of prejudices perceptions of people from other cultural and social backgorunds or minorities. Increased awareness of cultural diversity, problems and challenges of youth and discrimination will make participants more aware of making choices related to eg. The election, consultation, or creating European policies.
