Participation is a key element of democracy. By being active in the political context, citizens are able to understand their duties, highlight their rights and expose their demands to their political representatives. With this project IFLRY aims to promote participation of youth in Latin America.Latin American countries, such as Venezuela, are facing the risk of new dictatorships. In others, as Brazil and Argentina, the federal governments are developing policies aimed at over-regulating the media and the internet. In Bolivia, Peru, and Dominican Republic, among others, social inequalities are so high that poverty undermines any chance of civic engagement. Born in this reality, the current generation of youngsters face many obstacles to participate politically or economically. Nevertheless, the current events have shown that this youth is ready to take the responsibility for its future. During the last year, almost 2 million people rallied on the Brazilian streets demanding more transparency and government efficiency. Currently, the Venezuelan youth is rallying for a more democratic political system. The International Federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY), composed of more than 100 youth organisations from more than 70 countries, is aimed at using its 67-year experience to provide tools that grant autonomy, self-determination and entrepreneurial skills to the Latin American youth through a strategically planned project that includes (1) strengthening a regional network of civil society organizations, (2) providing replicable knowledge and tools through (2.a) two international seminars separated by a 4-month interval each, (2.b) locally organized follow-up activities and (2.c) a continuously supervised and mapped virtual network, and (3) organizing a Capacity Building Course that will equip young people with Non Formal Education methods to multiply the outcomes of the project. IFLRY has extensive experience in knowledge-sharing through NFE seminars.IFLRY’s overall theme for 2014 is ‘youth autonomy’. The conclusions of IFLRY’s 2014 overall theme will feed directly in the proposed project. It will be an added value to test the tools and techniques developed in a European context in Latin America. Besides that, IFLRY has been working with regional youth platforms such as LYMEC (Europe), OALY (Africa) and CALD-Youth (Asia). This experience will help the federation to integrate Latin American youth organisations in a platform solid enough to implement policy and change in the national and regional level.Goal of the Project: To make young people in Latin America participate in and influence local decision making processes by strengthening an international network of Latin American and European youth civil society organisations and by providing them with replicable knowledge and tools. This project will include youth from Europe and Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Mexico and Honduras.
