Youth exchange Flanders-Latvia around gender diversity
Date du début: 1 août 2015, Date de fin: 31 déc. 2015 PROJET  TERMINÉ

Embracing gender diversity and opening the issue for discussion is not easy in Flanders and even a much bigger challenge in Latvia. But together, we can achieve more. This concluded Holebihuis Vlaams-Brabant (Flanders) and Mozaika (Latvia), both LGBT-organisations, after their exchange in Riga in 2013. Their youth groups Mixed and Enof (Flanders) and Skapis (Latvia) decided to organise a youth exchange week in september 2015. 20 youngsters (10 from Belgium and 10 from Latvia) will embark on a joint journey to discover and compare how their societies react to differences in sexual orientation and gender identity, and how respect for gender diversity can be promoted. Inspired by "Gender in the Blender", an educational tool of the province of Flemish Brabant about gender diversity and transgender, the project will bring together a diverse range of young people from Latvia and Flemish Brabant: both straight and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, both people with a migrant background and natives as well as LGBT refugees. The participants are looking forward to exchange with peers from other countries and living in different situations. They hope to find a way to cope with the personal challenges their gender identity poses, but also aim to have an impact on many more Flemish and Latvian youngsters through social media, blogs and live testimonies. In addition, the participants will use their creativity with the help of professionals to translate the concept of Gender in the Blender in an audiovisual product as a long-term result. As such, the project combines personal development for the participants with an increase in local, regional and international awareness about gender diversity. The project is a also a response to the clear Latvian demand for tools to open gender diversity issues for discussion. The English translation of the Gender in the Blender website and the audiovisual result of the exchange project will contribute to international awareness raising long after the project has finished. The exchange will take place at 't Kasteeltje in Wijgmaal near Leuven, Belgium, between 2 and 9 September 2015.
