Youth empowerment through sport for youngsters with a disability - a sustainable partner initiative with youth sport workshops in east africa and Europe ( including an observer programme for facilitators from central Asia/Caucasus)
Date du début: 1 oct. 2011,

The overall objective of the project is the empowerment of youngsters with a disability from developing countries. As a key activity, a one week regional Youth Camp with 90 participants from five East African countries will be organized in Kigali, Rwanda. The National Paralympic Committee of Rwanda will be the host of this event and will form the local organizing committee. As an associated activity and impulse for the empowerment of youngsters with a disability in Central Asian countries through winter'sports programmes, a Winter Youth Camp in La Molina, Spain, will be organized with the partner organizations Play and Train and Freewhite. Five NPCs (Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan) in Central Asia/Caucasus will send their youth coordinators and coaches to participate in different workshops while the aprox. 40 young athletes participating in the camp come from European countries. The youth coodinators from Central Asia will attend as observers in the workshop in Spain to learn and experience the concept to be repeated in their home countries. In the lead up to the Winter Youth Camp, the partners will prepare the observers and do an assesment to identify the potential of youth propotion in their home countries. The expected outcome and impact of their attendance is to build up a sustainable youth programme for youngers with a disabilty in their countries. In both activities, participants consist of youngsters with different disabilities (visual impairment, wheelchair users (standing and walking impairments) and impairment of the upper body (e.g. amputations of upper extremities)), young coaches and youth coordinators. Each group (Youth Coordinators, youngsters and coaches) receives different training with the common goal of empowering youth through sport and educational workshops on rather social topics. As for Rwanda, the three sports to be involved will be indentified by the NPCs in the East African regions. The Winter Youth Camp in Spain will focus on Nordic Skiing, as the infrastructure in Central Asian countries does not provide for other winter sports. The training of coaches happens through "Coach to Coach" education with an experienced instructor. Youngsters practice sport under the guidance of these coaches and instructors, and participate in educational workshops on topics such as the UN Convention on the Rights for People with Disabilities, recommendations for governments of how to increase the percentage of youth with a disability receiving formal education and to augment their employment possibilities, team building, the power of sport in your life, nutrition and other health issues relevant to youth with a disability. In the camp in Rwanda, three young European athletes with a disability, selected by Play and Train through their exhaustive pool of youngsters, will participate. The partner organizations have one strong purpose in common: the empowerment of youth using sport as a tool to gain self-confidence and self-sufficiency. Organizing the activities in co-operation with each other under consideration of cultural differences allows them to exchange their experiences and the different ways to reach their aims and objectives. Both will enrich their work and help them to develop best practices. The awareness campaign will include the elaborated recommendations of the youth, involve communication channels like YouTube and Facebook. The partner organizations will actively be involved in developing awareness campaigns that are adequate for their cultural area.
