The Museum of Kymenlaakso is both the Kotka City Museum and the regional museum of Kymenlaakso. The museum operates at Maritime Centre Vellamo, which opened to the public in 2008. The operating concept of the museum is to research, record and exhibit the cultural heritage of Kotka and Kymenlaakso. In addition, the goals of life-long learning are observed in the audience outreach. The vision of the museum is to be an internationally recognized museum. The focus of the Museum of Kymenlaakso will, in the near future, be on cultural heritage education. Simultaneously, measures relating to cultural heritage will be linked to the tasks of even more more menbers of the staff. In Vellamo, various inclusive activities will soon be the responsibility of all actors. We are seeking international experiences and functional examples of bringing inclusive activities to cultural heritage education. The museum has already strengthened its international operations with regard to the main exhibition and the planning project of the collection center with the help of earlier Erasmus funding. When an industrial region in downturn is undergoing structural changes, it is especially important to support the interaction of the inhabitants with their cultural heritage. The goal of the Common Cultural Heritage Project is to create dialogical learning environments and to find inclusive methods for the museum’s cultural heritage education. The aim is to chart different possibilities to implement inclusive approaches and to exploit knowhow by experience. The role of the museum as a collective memory and a communication channel offers a natural platform for the agency of private individuals and communities. Our aim is to find examples of how to train, commit and utilize volunteers in cultural heritage education. As an outcome of the project, new services and materials will be produced for the use of the customers and interest groups. We shall prepare introductory packages relating to cultural heritage for the needs of the private, the public and the third sectors as well as of immigrants and those moving within Finland.Project mobility will be implemented through job shadowing periods and conference participation. Six experts from the museum, each with a long experience in museum work in his field, will participate in the periods and they will, in the future, take part in the cultural heritage education of the museum. The mobility periods are used to find out how dialogical learning environments and inclusive approaches are utilized elsewhere. The various methods and materials used in cultural heritage education will be studied at the targets. The points of interest include, inter alia, different walking tours, sculpture parks, digital applications and the accessibility of underwater objects. During the trips, information is acquired of productization of architectural targets, maintenance of habitat diversity and exploitation of new communication channels. Due to decreasing resources, the museum needs more volunteers and the aim is to find models for this cooperation. The project will strengthen the expertise of the staff and increase their knowhow of cultural heritage education. From Europe, we will find ways to commit volunteers and to work with them. We also aim at developing the activities of those accessing the international museum spheres and encouraging them to share their experiences. The project will increase the wellbeing, language skills and motivation of its participants. The long-term benefit will be that the inhabitants of Kymenlaakso will better appreciate the value of their own environment and are encouraged to find new meanings for it. The practices and approaches will be utilized in the operations of the museum and conveyed through projects and training to town districts, village communities and other regional actors.
