“YES – Youth Employability Skills” was a long term EVS project, focussed on giving long term, lower educated, unemployed youngsters the chance to go abroad in order to improve their practical skills while doing their EVS tasks at a variety of organisations in and around Ommen. During this project the youngsters gained skills, competences and knowledge regarding the current labour market in Europe and how they can adapt to this situation in their home countries in order to create fulfilment in their life after the EVS placement.
The EVS placement was for 15 volunteers who stayed between 5 and 12 months between the period of 01/01/2015 and 31/01/2016. The volunteers came from Albania, Spain, Latvia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Macedonia, Portugal, Romania and Iceland.
During the EVS placement the volunteers did EVS tasks at organisations in and around Ommen. In this way the volunteer created more insight concerning the current labour market, rules, labour ethos, norms and values, etc. The volunteer learnt about the Dutch labour market and working style. The volunteer gained more professional and personal competences and the volunteer worked alongside Dutch volunteers in these organisations and got in this way more in contact with the local community.
The theme of the project is employability through learning by experience method. Our objectives during the project were:
• To get them acquainted to the Dutch culture in order to increase their cultural understanding of the European Union and create a sense of European citizenship.
• To provide them with activities and opportunities to develop their work style, skills, competences, communication skills, self-confidence, etc.
• To challenge them to develop and follow a learning plan during their EVS.
• To create learning situations in which the volunteer need to find their own creative solutions.
We offered a playing field to the volunteers and we expected an active attitude from them. The method we used was learning by doing and the activities and organisations where they can gain new skills and competences were of a wide variety. We mostly left space for the volunteers to create their own plan of activities that suited their learning goals during their EVS.
This project was exclusively for youngsters who are unemployed for more than twelve months, who are lower educated and who fit the criteria of less opportunity by the Erasmus+ programme.
