In this century, health care systems and the education of health sector have undergone so many compulsory changes due to technological innovations, demographic changes and huge collection of knowledge. The vision of nursing embodies new roles in the aspects of both protective and therapeutic means. Our project includes health services such as care of old people or the handicapped which have been regarded as two disadvantageous groups. Taking care of patients is a difficult concept for the health care staff. However, taking care of the old and mentally disordered individuals is even more challenging and requires education and knowledge at full capacity. In this respect, while trying to identify the topic for the project, we collected the vies of administrative staff and the instructors of the field and decided to prepare the current project in order to provide vocational mobility to create internship opportunities for nursing students.
Banaz Vocational and Technical High School will carry out the project called “The Transfer of European Applications in Taking Care of the Old and the Mentally Disordered”. The project was started on 01 October 2015 and will end on 01 October 2016. We were completed the preparation and planning phases between October 2016 and March 2016. The assessment and evaluation of the project will be carried out between July and September 2016. The spreading activity was accomplished at the same time. The vocational training mobility dates were as follows:
Spain, 07 May 2016 – 21 May 2016, Self-care for the mentally disordered and communication, 20 students and 2 accompanying teachers.
We selected the 10th, 11th, and the 12th grade students from the nursing department. There are 86 girls and 27 boys with potential to participate in the project. As can be seen, the number of female students exceeds over the number of male students in our school. Therefore, the majority of the participants were consist of female students. There were 5 students with limited facilities regarding their economical and social background among 40 participating students. The participant management team were conducted some tests and questionnaires to the students. These tests were included items to identify attendance to the lessons, the rate of participation in classes and experience level on job and foreign languages. Basic level capabilities were based for selection. The project involved activities to improve existing vocational skills and skills of foreign language. The accompanying teachers were selected among the administrative staff and the branch teachers. The criteria for accompanying teachers were level of English and abilities to organize and observe.
Our hosting partner in Sevilla, Spain, Nureler S.C. were responsible for placement of 20 students to the internship programs during the visit of the project. The participants in this visit were built capacities in appropriate communication techniques to approach mentally disordered people, care of the disabled and their self-care, empathy, psychology of the disabled and management and intervention of crisis. The students will also have the opportunity to observe new methods and techniques applied in Spain.. Research, observation, application, meeting, seminar and use of innovative technologies were the methods in both of the two mobilities.
The objective during the visit were to have the students gain experience both in their field and foreign languages. The students were also have the chance to make cultural exchanges with the Europeans. The gains were also include increases in the employment of our students and improvement in the quality of education in our school by adding European dimension. The graduates of our school will also have better employment in the long run.
