The European volunteers we are reporting about here volunteered at the supported accomodation projects and affiliated drop-in centres (hubs) helping offer the young people Depaul works with social, and in some cases, educational support. The European Volunteers were directly involved with helping these young people to develop the life skills to be more independent and the communication skills to function in mainstream society. The volunteers supported trained staff and were involved in day-to-day activities in the hostel as well as creating their own work sessions with the young people. The host projects were: Simonside House - North East - 1 volunteer North Tyneside Pathway - North East - 2 volunteers South Tyneside - North East - 2 volunteers Greenwich Pathway - London - 4 volunteers The Grove Gravesend - London - 1 Volunteer Each of the volunteers had an allocated supervisor and mentor to support them throughout the programme. All of our volutnteers had very similar roles as our projects are very similar around the country. The volunteer's roles comprised of the following: - Assisted with planning and leading weekly cooking, employability, and photography workshops amongst other examples. -Consulted with young people regarding activties - Promoted our Get Up and Go programme - Attended accomodation house meetings - Attended relevant training - Mentored young people to help them reach their goals - Consulted with young people regarding activties and events - Attended volunteers events and fairs - Shadowed support staff with support sessions and outreach visits These tasks were undertaken at the following Depaul projects: Simonside House in Heaton, Newcastle provides supported accomodation to young people (female and male) aged 16-25 who are homeless or at risk from homelessness. The house has 14 bedrooms, and shared bathroom and kitchen facilities. It is staffed 24 hours a day. As well as offering supported tenancies on site, it provides a variety of support tailored to your individual needs to help you move on to independent living. The South Tyneside Young People’s Accommodation Pathway aims to “work together as a Consortium to provide a Pathway of support to meet the needs of vulnerable young people in South Tyneside”.The Pathway offers a range of services for disadvantaged young people aged 16-24 who are homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless in South Tyneside. The volunteers were primarily based at The Hub a drop-in centre for young people. The Greenwich London pathway comprises of supported accommodation and specialist support for young people aged 16-25 across the Borough of Greenwich . The Grove (Gravesend) is a service that offers 6 units of supported accommodation and specialist support for young people aged 16-25 The EVS volunteer's had the following impact: - residents regularly engaged with the weekly cooking workshop helping them to improve their life skills - Young people reported to have increased confidence and motivation as a result of engaging in the workshops the volunteers provided . - Young people fed back that they felt that the EVS volunteers were always so happy, friendly and helpful. - Young people who attended the Around the World workshop (created by the volunteers) were able to get a rich understanding of other cultures and languages from around the world - EVS volunteers were able to improve their language skills, and gain a deeper understanding of the health and social sector in the UK. - Young people who attended the Around the World workshop (created by the volunteers) were able to get a rich understanding of other cultures and languages from around the world - Volunteers learnt how to develop their communication and listening skills, particularly in English
