Working together in Romania
Date du début: 1 janv. 2015, Date de fin: 1 janv. 2017 PROJET  TERMINÉ

This project will take place in Floresti, in Romania. It involves four young volunteers from the Netherlands that will do a 12 months lasting project to support Charis Foundation, a non-profit organization that aims to support less priveleged groups in Romanian society, with a special focus on Roma people and women. Charis foundation organises all kinds of activities for children and adults. Volunteers will be involved in the different activities, depending on their personal competencies and interests. Volunteers involved need to be openminded, respectful towards people from different cultural backgrounds and creative in finding solutions for challenging situations. This EVS project is a great experience, for volunteers, local society and the organizations participating. The volunteers learn about themselves, their own cultural background and their (usually) quite luxiourious lifestyle compared to some people they work with in Romania. They learn to interact with a great variety of people, including Roma children. This sometimes is a challenging but also a rewarding experience that will be confrontational now and then, but it also stimulate self-reflection and self development. Local society benefits from the presence of the volunteers, since their presence makes it possible to organize different activities for children (playing, singing, reading, etc), for adults (food and clothes distribution) and events for special target groups (for instance workshops for women). The volunteers are a great benefit for the hosting organization, because their presence and their assistance on an operational level, enables Charis Foundation to organize additional activities. Volunteers will learn while doing, observing experienced volunteers from the local community, but also observing professional staff that is involved in the activities. The long term benefit is the increased understanding of people with very different backgrounds (for instance Roma children and young Dutch volunteers). Bringing them together and letting them interact with eachother, will increase mutual understanding as well as self awareness of the (young) people involved.
