The Stockholm Hotel and Restaurant School is a municipal school in the city of Stockholm that provides Upper Secondary Education within two programmes, the Restaurant and Food programme and the Hotel and Tourism programme. The orientation of our programmes allow our students to work in the whole world. Our school has therefore a clear international profile which means that we offer our students the opportunity to do their workplace training abroad. This is in order to prepare them and to give them all the necessary qualities to dare to apply for a job in another country after completing their studies.
The aim of this project has been to:
- Ensure that the international perspective becomes part of the ordinary work of our school
- Offer our students the opportunity to do their work place training abroad in order to strengthen their professional skills and prepare them for an international labour market
- Inspire and encourage school staff to gain international experience, professionally as well as cross-culturally, and with that develop and raise the quality of teaching.
Continue to participate in the EfVET Conference where the opportunity is given to take part in what is happening concerning vocational training in Europe. The possibility of networking with current and future collaborators is also an important part.
Our partners during the project period were:
- Hotel Portixol och Hotel Espendido, Spain
- Escuela Internacional de Cocina (EIdC), Spain
- Konditor&Cook, Great Britain
- ROC Horizon College, The Netherlands
- TRYP Tenerife Princesa Sol, Spain
59 students have completed the work place training in another country during the project period. Four teachers have been job shadowing during one week at EIdC. Four staff have participated in the EfVET Conference. The project has been carried out and managed by the school´s international group. The tasks have been divided up among the participants of the group.
The students have been prepared for the work place training abroad, conducted during 5-11 weeks, depending on the orientation of the chosen programme. After completing the work place training period the students have reported their experiences and evaluated their achieved skills and knowledge. The students´ performance and achieved skills during the work place training is documented by the supervisor and sent to the course coordinator at school where they are validated according to the ECVET model. The documentation given by the supervisor forms an important part in the final grading of the applicable course.
The students have received the following parts of the Europass; CV, Language passport, Mobility and Certificate Supplement.
The Students´evaluations indicate high satisfaction. Many students believe that this was the best thing they have ever done. They especially highlight the ”non-formal skills” such as, ability to co-operate, power of initiative, sense of responsibility and a greater self-confidence. The professional competence has also been strengthened and the students can consider working abroad in the future.
Our teachers have been shadowing teachers at EIdC which have given them a better understanding of vocational training in Spain.
They have participated in lessons in Spanish cooking and oenology, typical for the region.
The teachers have had a very positive experience and have found it most stimulating to take part of new techniques and teaching methods.
They have also raised their knowledge about Spanish food culture and received new personal contacts which has led to a greater understanding and respect of the Spanish culture in general.
Our school staff have attended the EfVET Conference, taking part of different projects in order to be aware of what is going on concerning vocational training in Europe at the moment.New international contacts have been made which has also contributed to that the need for skill development has been met.
Our school´s international strategy and by giving priority to internationalization has led to that our school, during the project period, has received several study visits from other countries. We have also acted as intermediary organisation for bakery students from Holland who conducted their work place training at bakeries in Stockholm. This an example of how experiences have been shared and that the international perspective has spread in school, regionally, nationally and internationally.
Our school has, through this project, developed and strengthen international work in our school and ensured the continued long-term cooperation with our partners.
Our students are well prepared for the needs of the labour market of skilled labour both in Sweden and abroad.
Our school staff have received relevant training which has increased the quality of teaching.
Our positive experiences concerning the fulfilment of the aims of this project makes us feel well prepared and motivated to start our new project Erasmus 2016-1-SE01-KA102-021902.
