The youth exchange entitled "Words can hurt. Shake them off!" will take place in Palermo (Sicily) from the 7th to 14th May 2017 and it will last six days. We foresee to involve 48 young people (6 for each country) aged between 18 and 30 years. This expression, often translated into Italian with the formula "incitement to hatred" means a type of speech that has no other function than to express hatred and intolerance. The exchange will stimulate young people on this issue and bring them to it emotionally and cognitively. Some activities will be implemented in order to strongly discourage hate speech on line and to fight all forms of discrimination and violation of human rights, stimulating the reflection on the topic. Sharing point of views on a so important and valuable topic , will push the participants to become more aware of themselves, of their role in contemporary society for their own actions. The overall objective of the project is to fight all forms of discrimination and violation of human rights, thus fight extremism and hate speech online. The following specific objectives are foreseen:1. to raise young people's awareness of their behavior on line and about its dangers;2. to increase young people's awareness of the dangers of hate speech on line as a threat to basic human rights and democracy;3. to enhance the development of positive relationships between young people from different backgrounds encouraging a reflection on the own culture of belonging;4. to allow the participants to acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to the protection and promotion of human rights;5. to encourage the correct use of digital devices. In achievement of these objectives we will realize all activities using intercultural learning methodology, to prevent and fight racism, xenophobia and intolerance.During the exchange the participants will achieve a unanimous definition of hate speech sharing their point on view on the topic . The issues related to human rights will be tackled ,highlighting the importance of their protection. The young people will be guided in a critical analysis of the right use of internet and digital devices. Role playing activities will be realized in order to facilitate the debate so as to experience firsthand the hate speech’ phenomenon, checking if any of the participants was the "victim" or unconscious "executioner" promoting the identification with the other. Young people will be able to discover the importance of cultural difference, mutual understanding and peaceful exchange. Dialogue and debate will be the main elements of the experience that young people will undertake. It will enhance the freedom of thought, diversity, potential and creativity of the participants to make them active agents of social development and change. The final event of the project will involve the local community, particularly the young people. The video realized by the participants will be showed. It will focuses on the importance of defending human rights and fighting against all forms of incitement to hatred. This event will provide an opportunity for the young participants to meet the local community, and it will be an important moment of reflection on stereotypes and prejudices allowing them to get closer to different cultures. The final event will be, more than an important moment of dissemination of project’s results, a tool to guarantee the visibility of the Erasmus Plus Programme and to inform about the opportunities it offers to young people.
