In addition to its outstanding literary profile, the project we are presenting also has political and social ambitions: it sets out to discover writers that have until now been unknown to Spanish readers and by translating their works, to bring to light a series of women’s destinies that have hitherto been hidden. The project proposes the publication of five works by women authors from five different countries: Rosamond Lehmann: Invitation to the Waltz (United Kingdom); Kirsten Thorup (Denmark): Lille Jonna; Brigitte Reimann (Germany): Franziska Linkerhand; Alessandra Lavagnino (Italy): Via dei Serpenti; Torborg Nedreaas (Norway): Av måneskinn gror det ingenting. As well as their high literary quality and the wide recognition these writers have received in their native countries, all of these works share a common concern for the fate of their protagonists, all of whom are women. They have all opened up the literature of their countries to themes that have traditionally been neglected by male writers, such as the relationship between mother and daughter, the entry of adolescents into society and the lack of options available to women, or the difficulty of finding one’s place in society where one can fit in and develop fully as a person and as a professional if one does not conform to what society demands. In some cases, they also deal with themes like motherhood, and more extreme issues like rape and abortion, experiences that are deeply personal for a woman, but also fundamental in any human society, issues that need to be tackled and be made explicit, that must have a place in social, political and also legal discourse, but which have rarely been even outlined let alone analyzed in male literature. Furthermore, in all of the novels we have chosen, the value of language is important as the only possible channel to bear witness to those lives and lived experiences which would otherwise remain silenced or limited to the confines of the household and domestic routine.
