Our project was carried out throughout 10 months in Bialystok’s Association of Orthodox Initiative OrthNet. The main objectives of the project were: to create a space for volunteers to gain new competencies and extending those already acquired, among those needed on the European labor market after the completion of the project; to expand and enrich the activities carried out by OrthNet and also to promote the idea of voluntary work as a the perfect way to gain professional experience. In order to carry out the project tasks, we were planning to invite two volunteers from Bulgaria and Georgia, interested in journalism, photography and religious studies. They were supposed to be engaged in the activities assigned to them, bold in decision-making, flexible, and creative. It was important for us that they would be open to change, willing to share their skills and that they would have a positive attitude towards working in an international team. Unfortunately we were unable to recruit people from Bulgaria, despite being aware that they could have benefited from participating in our project; therefore, with the approval of the National Agency, we decided on hosting two volunteers from Georgia, from the sending organization who was partner in the hereby mentioned project. Volunteers worked from Monday to Friday from 9.00 to 16.00. Each of them performed their tasks individually, as well as carrying out activities in a team. The tasks of the volunteers included:
- Collecting, sorting and cataloging photos sent by users of orthphoto.net, as well as selecting the most interesting photographs and, with those, creating photocasts;
- Assistance in the preparation of photographic exhibitions on a particular topic (arranging individual frames, mounting pictures on stands and display easels, participating in promoting the event and giving out information, as well as documenting the opening of each of these events);
- Conducting interviews with people involved in activities supporting Orthodoxy in Poland and posting their content on cerkiew.pl;
- Networking - establishing contacts with foreign organizations with a similar profile, and more.
The realization of our project has improved the quality of the professional skills of our volunteers. It created an opportunity for a practical way of learning the profession, through which the volunteers increased their competences and gained new experiences. Young Europeans gathered courage to build their own reality, regardless of where they live; they are more mobile and flexible, and therefore more open to seek job opportunities not only in Georgia but also in other European countries. Previously mentioned assignments also had an impact on the local community of Bialystok, especially on young people. Volunteers’ opportunity to learn from other cultures has allowed them to expand their horizons and to build a comprehensive open-mindedness and understanding of the diversity of attitudes. By participating in the project both OrthNet and the organization from Georgia once again confirmed the mutual understanding and good cooperation. Carrying out this project was an opportunity to verify work methodology, especially by trying new and implementing unused operating methods , which facilitated and improved our way of functioning. Thanks to this we both could expand our program offer in our own countries and increase efficiency in the realization of international projects.
