What is life?
Date du début: 1 févr. 2016, Date de fin: 31 juil. 2016 PROJET  TERMINÉ

The present mobility project takes the form of a youth exchange. Youngsters from 4 different countries are going to plunge into the context of digital technologies for 7 days. Through a mixture of workshops, debates and practical activities they will explore a few issues related to the expansion of artificial intelligence and the social media. In particular, they will tackle the fundamental question of the definition of a living being, in other words the question of what distinguishes a living being from an inanimate object. A second theoretical issue they will explore is the phenomenon of the anthropomorphization of technological devices, i.e. the fact that an increasing number of people seem to attribute to technological devices such as personal computers and mobile phones, but also social robots, human like features. The project activities also involve a strong practical component. In fact, throughout the exchange, participants will have the opportunity to handle a wide range of maker tools (microcontrollers and other electronic computer programmable devices), which will, as a matter of fact, project them into the reality of a fablab, hacker/maker space, that is, a thoughtful, dynamic, globally connected platform for local innovation. One of the activities participants will be required to complete will consist in the creation of a concrete output which resembles a living creature. For this purpose, they will have access to the whole range of maker tools available as well as different types of materials, such as plastic, wood, all retrieved from discarded objects.Besides the main activities on digital technology, the exchange will also include sightseeing and recreational activities, such as sports and team-building games.Through this project, we aim to motivate youngsters to take active part in the current digital revolution and to make the most of the opportunities that digital technologies have to offer, especially with regards new jobs in the emerging digital industry. The group of participants is expected to be highly heterogeneous: it will include youngsters dropping out of school, youngsters from difficult social-cultural backgrounds, people struggling to find an employment, and seasonal workers. Another ambition of this project consist in providing participants with the necessary intellectual resources to think critically of technological innovation as well as, more generally, of scientific progress. We hope that this will in turn contribute to shaping opinionated citizens capable of rational and instructed choices on environmental, political economical matters. In the long term, as a result of this project, we expect to witness greater cooperation among Tambour Battant and the partner organizations for this project, for example in the context of more ambitious initiatives such as Erasmus + KA2. We also expect to witness greater enthusiasm and interest of youth and local youth organizations at a regional, national and European level for mobility and educational opportunities sponsored by the Erasmus + programme.
