School, and particularly the classroom, represents a privileged stage of relations. The relationships between students are characterized as being relations between equals. These interactions affect in a transcendent way the social development of the child. Unfortunately, not always these relationships are positive. WHO determines that the conflict becomes abuse when it has these 3 features: power imbalance, intentionality/repeat and helplessness/customization. Bullying is usually as well a collective or group component. The consequences of bullying are many and profound. For the victim, the consequences are low self-esteem, suicidal passive attitudes, emotional disorders, or thoughts. In addition to the loss of interest in questions concerning studies, which can trigger a situation of failure at school and even abandonment. As for the aggressors some studies indicate that the perpetrators can be found in the beginnings of criminal behaviour. Therefore, this project is intended as a preventive measure to avoid the occurrence of situations of bullying or abuse among schoolchildren, young people themselves becoming leaders in the defense of rights, providing them with the necessary tools to act when they are witnesses or victims of serious cases, and to avoid that they participate in actions that may lead to a situation of abuse.
In short, we aim to contribute to achieve a good climate of coexistence and respect among students, encouraging the development of quality education and opportunities for all, avoiding to increase the rates of school failure and abandonment and at last to stay the course with a more equitable basisThis objective is one of the 4 specific objectives of the strategy for education and training 2020 in the European Union: "promoting equity, social cohesion and active citizenship: education and training should enable all citizens to acquire and develop the skills and competencies necessary for their employability, as well as supporting continuous learning, active citizenship and intercultural dialogue".The Council has prepared a reference point for limiting early school leaving to 10%.
The participants of this proposal were a group of young people (4 + a leader) coming from: Spain, Italy, Romania, Sweden, Estonia and Bulgaria. The challenge of practicing Theatre of the Oppressed was to generate future commitments within the group with which it worked. The proposal was based on two parts: one part was dedicated to training and was implemented in their places of origin. The other part was more dedicated to empowerment, putting into practice what had been learned and internalized as their own, through the methodology of the Theatre of the Oppressed. This second part was took place in the meeting in Valencia between 16th and 20th of May 2016 (5 days). The workshops aimed to empower young people to become effective allies in the incidents of bias and bullying by increasing their understanding of the impact of the insults, and other behaviors of bias in their school and community, educating them about the specific function to be an ally, teaching them a process to assess a safety intervention, and giving them the opportunity to develop and practice a variety of alternative responses to take action against bullying. A web was created, so that students could upload all types of materials (photos, jobs, news, murals, reviews, videos, etc.) in order to serve as material for the video of the campaign “What can I do? Stop bullying, take action!” This campaign also seeked to make visible the results looking for the impact of involving institutional agents as well as other stakeholders. The focus of the meeting in Valencia was based on the use of theatre as a tool as well to discuss bullying and cyberbullying, as to make the problem understandable (taking the place of the victim, the perpetrator or the witness) and the interpretation, coming to the causes that give rise to those problems and giving solutions against the situation in order to prevent similar scenes. The impact of these experiences will help to start a process of motivation to transform reality.
