The WISE (Weather, Inter-Cultural, Social-economic, Environmental) Food project has its roots in A SEED's long history of campaigning on agriculture issues like sustainable farming, GMO crops (Genetically Modified Organisms) and seeds patenting. The WISE Food project looks at the global challenges in agriculture and food processing such as food security and food sovereignty, seed diversity, the industrial food chain in relation to our daily meal, access to land and seeds and the impact on cultural diversity. We also stress the connection between climate change and our current food system. The WISE Food project seeks to concentrate on promoting positive alternatives to reach a more sustainable food system. The WISE Food project is aimed at making young people more aware of their role as responsible citizens and how they can get active to change their environment on a local, national and European level. At a more personal level, the WISE Food project promotes an understanding of responsible and healthy lifestyle choices and how they relate to the aforementioned challenges with food production. The main objectives of the project are:- to raise awareness about global challenges related to sustainable development of agriculture and food processing, seed diversity, food sovereignty and climate change;- to encourage youngsters to get involved with critical and creative thinking about alternatives to these global challenges, and to feel empowered to take action for the solutions of them - in particular in the area of healthy, sustainable and fair food production and consumption habits;- to give young people the opportunity to acquire skills in organising, networking, team working and to experience project development in a dynamic international work environment, as a preparation to enter the job market with self-confidence in managing tasks and projects;- to foster inter-cultural dialogue and understanding in the areas of the WISE Food project and stimulate European citizenship awareness and participation.Together with the A SEED team, the EVS-ers will develop and manage international projects within the WISE Food project. The volunteers bring different perspectives from their country and region of origin and from previous experiences. This culturally diverse input is invaluable to ASEED’s work in general and to the dynamics of the WISE Food project. The project does not aim to be an isolated initiative; the EVSers will share their experiences in order for youth groups and individuals in their home countries to feel inspired to learn from these experiences and develop their own projects. From May 2nd 2016 to May 1st 2017, A SEED would like to welcome 3 European Volunteers from Germany and the UK to involve in the WISE Food Project. The volunteers are curious and motivated youths, who are willing to join and learn from a small yet dynamic international grassroots organisation. A SEED's working methods for the WISE Food project are based on horizontal decision-making, the use of informal learning techniques, and campaign and awareness-raising activities. As a result of the project, we expect the three EVSers to learn to work independently, to carry out various activities, to have a better understanding of multicultural settings - which includes communicating in different languages - and to create new professional and personal possibilities and opportunities. On the long term, the WISE Food project contributes to the development of a well-informed and young critical citizens network. At an individual level and within their community, participants of the activities run within the project will have the tools to rethink their consuming habits related to food and environment in a more responsible and healthy way. At a regional, national and European level, they will be more likely to participate in the democratic process, especially when related to environmental, farming and food policies.
