The Project, “W Lustrze Opowieści” (In the Mirror of Stories) is a joint action of Polish, Hungarian (Roma), and Slovakian youth leading to a collaborative workshop in Kraków and culminating in an open air performance. The first task is for the participants to make a comprehensive collection of stories, legends and superstitions connected to the traditions of the Roma people. This task will primarily be accomplished by the Hungarian delegation, consisting mainly of Roma youth. Then, through comparison with the cultures of Poland, Slovakia and Hungary, the participants will examine how Roma culture is present in the aforementioned nations. In this we do not mean to focus on merely Roma folklore which may be known, but rather to engage with how much our respective cultures and civilization owe to the ancient Roma traditions. The comparative and creative phase is to take place during workshop, held in Kraków during the month of October. The final performance will take the form of an artistic collage, consisting of short theatrical etudes based on the collected oral materials, musical elements and work in the visual arts. In addition to fighting the ever present stereotypes about the Roma, we also want to promote an attitude of openness among young people still living in the oral cultural tradition to share the stories still current among the Roma. These activities will take place in the historic settings of the 16th Century building in the center of Kraków where Teatr Zależny is situated and the courtyard of the nearby Archeological Museum of Kraków. The work will result in an increased ability among the participants to learn about different cultures which is a clear long term benefit. Additionally, this process is also associated with the struggle against xenophobia and the unfortunately still current racist attitudes held towards the European Roma. These benefits will also apply to the viewers of our presentation. The project will be joined by 48 young participants from Poland, Hungary and Slovakia, ranging in age from 17-30 and the work will be led by several workshop directors, educators, musicians and visual artists.
