Volunteering Xchange came to life in March 2014 when three organisations from Belgium, Finland and the UK met at a PBA Make the Move in Portugal. All three organisations work with young people under the age of 18, engaging them in volunteering opportunities and it therefore seemed natural to plan a youth exchange where young people could use their experiences of volunteering to explore intercultural learning. The 8-day youth exchange was made up of 27 young volunteers from Belgium, Finland and the United Kingdom and it took place at the Outsider Club in Oudenaarde, Belgium in August 2014. The objectives of the youth exchange were to exchange good practice in volunteering, to increase participation in volunteering both locally and internationally and promote intercultural learning. The youth exchange was made up of volunteering workshops, peer-facilitated sessions, practical volunteering in the field, intercultural activities and a final event which was organised and delivered by young people for the local residents of Oudenaarde. The project was young person-led and young people were responsible in a large part for designing, delivering and evaluating the project.
