TERMINÉ
Turin is located in Northern-west of Italy, near the French border and very closed to the Alps. It is the fourth biggest city in Italy and it is very rich in history and culture. In 2006 Turin hosted the XX Olympic Winter Games and after this big event the city occurred in a big change of its urban identity: from an industrial city, in which the main activities were related to car manufacturing (Fiat), to a cultural and touristic one.
The general environment is multicultural, due to the strong immigration (from Southern Italy in the 60's and from Est Europe, South America and North Africa from 90's since nowadays), tourism, and Youth mobility (e.g. thanks to LLP Program).
The 2 volunteers will be involved in a local-level educational project targeted to young people with fewer opportunities (aged 14-30) and elderly people living in San Paolo-Cenisia, a district in Turin.
In particular activities will be carried out in the schools and in two gathering centres in the neighbour: the Internet Point in Via Vigone 74/A and the centre situated in the council house context in Corso Racconigi.
The activities in both centres are coordinated by the Urban Regeneration Department of Turin City Council, which cooperates and helps the associations to carry on the different proposals.
The gathering centers are collocated in a high populated area, really close to a big open-air market, schools, churches and shops. The public transport is also very good in the area, with 8 lines between buses and trams and the subway.
Since 2000, the neighbourhood has seen an increasing of 59% of the foreign population, which now constitutes 10.7% of the total. The incidence of young people under aged on foreign residents is remarkable, considering also the decline of Italian youngsters because of the low birth rate. This is really important, especially in relation to services, schools, integration and social cohesion.
The activities of the EVS project aim to develop the comprehension of different cultures living in the district and thus represent an input for the self-growth of the volunteers involved.
The aim of the project is to develop the volunteers' understanding of different cultures and situations, which, at the same time, may lead to personal growth of the volunteers themselves. Throughout their volunteering experience, youngsters will work with people with fewer opportunities (mainly old people and immigrant young ones) and therefore have the chance to give some of their time and experience to the ones who need. In terms of service and learning opportunities the EVS volunteers will be able to develop several skills, in order to improve their performance.
What we can offer to the volunteers in terms of learning opportunities is the chance to improve their social and communicative skills, their skills related to project management (e.g how to write and manage a social project to get better the life-style of the local community), to develop teamwork abilities in a multicultural environment.
The volunteers will also have the opportunity to learn Italian; we consider that is very important to give them linguistic basis, in order to allow them to communicate with people and further on to realize a project in an autonomous way.
The volunteers will play an active role in the everyday activities of our organization, they will fully co-operate and support the staff and the Italian volunteers normally acting in the two gathering centers: educators, psychologists, ITC experts and social workers.
The volunteers could develop several activities in the Internet point and in the council house context center, according with their abilities and interests (e.g. English lessons, art and craft workshops, Internet help, etc.). In this way they’ll become aware of new non-formal education concepts and methods and they will develop the ability to convert ideas into real projects and actions.
With their own mentors, volunteers will reflect on their learning processes and evaluate their learning outcomes.
The volunteers will be involved from Tuesday to Saturday in the activities of the association for a maximum of 35 weekly hours.
Sometimes, anyway, there will be events that will take place during the weekends, in these cases, the volunteers will have day-off during the week.
