Volunteering af Café Utopia
Date du début: 1 sept. 2011,

Overall: AFS Interkultur wishes to give young people in Europe and EVS partner countries who participate in the EVS-program as well as the Danes who host or work with the volunteers, the opportunity to develop their intercultural skills and understanding through their participation in the EVS program. Through the project AFS Interkultur also aims to turn diversity into an asset instead of a source of conflict. It is our belief that people change the world by taking responsibility in their local community aided by a wider global perspective. In the field of intercultural learning nothing can match the impact of a facilitated face-to-face experience that brings people together across the boundaries of nation, culture and socio-economic status.Café Utopia:Café Utopia is a high profile café catering for the general public and operated in the same way as other cafés with the only difference that the people employed there have a mental diagnosis such as schizophrenia, manic-depression, borderline etc. The concept behind the café is the idea that the best treatment for this group of people is for them to work in a proper work place, receiving a salary and thus living a life like everybody else. In that way they can feel needed in society and gain both competences and self-esteem through meaningful work. The café is a so called social/economic project, which means, that it is a non profitable project for people with disabilities.Café Utopia wishes to offer a spot for one volunteer from Finland for a 10 months long EVS starting from September 2011.We think we have a very well functioned and unique project for the treatment of this group of people and we would like to share that with other countries. Moreover, we would like to give our staff an intercultural experience through the interaction with the EVS volunteer. The volunteer will work in the café in Holstebro together with the staff.Through a stay at Café Utopia the volunteer will get insight in all aspects of operating a café. Moreover, he/she will get knowledge about people with mental diseases and get a deeper understanding on how to engage with them. The volunteer will also learn about social/economic organisations and the benefit they provide to the greater community. The volunteer will be hosted in a host family.
