Vocational English Online Courses and Course Evaluation System

The project aims to improve the quality of English language skills and to integrate these skills within vocational training, for students of technical universities studying a range of subjects from civil engineering through to computer technology. This responds to the fact that technical subjects increasingly tend to work in English and supports the potential European mobility of technical university students in their future careers. The English language training will be computer-based and will include a variety of methods such as video and audio lectures, real-time video conferences and peer-to-peer internet voice-mail. Language learning will be based upon examples from existing student courses, and will be contextualised with respect to their prospective working environment. To this end, each partner educational institution will seek a mentor institution from a local business or Chambers of Commerce. Mentor institutions will nominate a professional to take part in the development of the project's online courses. This will provide students with a practical perspective on the needs of the marketplace with respect to vocational training and language acquisition. Course content will be designed, standardised and evaluated by selected partners and further piloted in each of the partner countries. Course content will adapt to a variety of models, in using the computer-based environment, namely student-to-student, teacher-to-student and student-to-teacher. Learner-centred learning will be emphasised with respect to choices in consideration of entry levels, methods for learning and testing and the amount of available feedback & assistance. A dissemination team will be established by the project to manage the project's dissemination strategy using a range of traditional and innovative methods.
