VIRTUAL EXCHANGE - Training and Guidance for Female B-SET (Business, Science, Engineering & Technology) Students to Enhance European Placement Experience

'Virtual Exchange', an Internet-based 'one stop shop' being developed by WiTEC (Women in Science and Technology) will provide training and guidance for female students in business, science, engineering and technology (B-SET) to prepare them for work placements abroad. There is a particular need for specific supportive training for young female undergraduates in the B-SET due to the low numbers of women in this area, who can therefore suffer from isolation on a placement or during their studies. This project will help them acquire the necessary combination of skills to make them more employable in a wider European labour market. This virtual exchange page (and interactive CD ROM for those without Internet access), will provide some 900,000female B-SET students in the partner organisations plus their host organisation advisors with:° A tool to identify training needs and to track the development of skills before and during the work placement;° Training in personal and professional development skills; ° Language training and cultural preparation;° Careers guidance facilities for placements of young women in non-traditional fields; ° A support network for students on placement;° A tool to facilitate monitoring, communication and information exchanges between organisations prior to and during work placements.A quarterly electronic bulletin will be posted on the site outlining activities and the programme of events. Focus groups of students, careers advisors and placement promoters will provide feedback on the project's design and content.
