The VHS Selb is a certified adult education centre. A wide range of educational opportunities in partial or full time appeal to different target groups. Yet training opportunities and courses can always only be as good as the planning and executing employees. As a consequence training and development of employees has been an important topic at the VHS for a long time, for instance through the creation of an annual employee development plan in context of Quality Management.The project aims at raising further education programs from a mostly national orientation onto an international level.
Based on the increasingly international character of learning groups, the prime objective of this project was to improve the intercultural competence of all employees at all levels. A better understanding of the particular needs of the students is a prerequisite for the success of all planned further education courses to come.
Further employee education at the VHS Selb is not considered as a sole strategy, but as an integrated complete system; certain trainings are interconnected, influence each other and use synergetic effects. Trainings have been carried out for all divisions within the vhs:
• Sensitization and extended insights in working with multicultural groups as well as identifying and dealing with signs of racism and hostility to strangers has been implemented for the head of department;
• An exchange of ‘best practice’ experiences and alternative methods on a European level has been realised for pedagogical employees,
• and teachers trained a mixture of methodology, didactics and technical input
The project was scheduled for a 2 years period and provided 20 employees of the vhs Selb with the opportunity to participate in international further education. 11 Freelance lectures as well 9 salaried employees and executives were involved. The selection of participants has been taking place from the beginning throughout the project and has been subject to a mix of not only integrating long-term employees but also get involve new colleagues and freelance lecturers. A full-time project manager assisted the selection procedures, liaised with educational partner institutes abroad, established new contacts, supported employees in planning and organization stage, guaranteed the documentation and evaluation as well as communication of results both within and beyond the institution.
The selected trainings took place in Iceland, Great Britain, France, Italy, Austria, Slovenia and Malta. These were courses designed for language lecturers, the communication of methodology and didactics for all faculties and the sensitization and prevention of cultural and racist motivated conflicts.
Due to further competences some employees were able to take on new tasks or to extend the scope of their work at the adult education centre. A positive improvement in the efficiency of work arrangements and the placement of apprenticeships for vhs-participants as well as the superior quality of language courses generated a substantial increase in the demand. Hence the organisation was able to increase their human resources levels on several occasions during the period of the project.
The project has been backed by the vhs project management. The results of the trainings were integrated into the strategical development plan and attracted in addition interest in annual staff appraisals.
