VERSO UNA SCUOLA A DIMENSIONE EUROPEA
Date du début: 1 juin 2016, Date de fin: 31 mai 2018 PROJET  TERMINÉ

Our school is renowned in the province of Siracusa due to its long-lasting tradition and high-quality standards. It covers different areas of education: liceo scientifico, delle scienze umane, delle scienze umane (op. economico sociale) and liceo scientifico -tecnologico and is attended by about 800 students. They and their families rely on the school high performances, which make our students ready to be European citizens and meet the challenges of our modern society. They often take part in internationally accredited activities thanks to the level of competences our school population acquires and the high standards they achieve in foreign languages. The exchange projects carried out by our school have always met our students’ expectancy and enhanced their motivation. Tangible results have been achieved thanks to our L2 teachers’ professional skills. However, these teachers feel the need to update their competences to meet the challenges of modern society. Moreover, they are aware of how undeniable the benefits of frequent linguistic and cultural full immersion experiences are. In addition, the updated teaching methodologies may be applied to teaching Italian as L2. On the other hand, national school reforms have made CLIL compulsory in Italian secondary high schools to meet the new innovative European initiatives. This is why our school promotes and fosters CLIL teaching and encourages teachers of non-linguistic subjects to improve their language skills as well as to learn CLIL methodology. Also, our society is rapidly evolving into a multiracial and multicultural one. This is largely due to the growing number of migrants who risk their lives to reach our shore. For this reason, our school feels the urge to promote values such as tolerance and inclusion. Being territorial centre for the assistance of children with special needs and prevention centre against bulling and cyber-bullying, its long-lasting aim has always been to teach respect for diversity and integration. Furthermore, the latest national school reform has introduced a new professional, the ICTmaster, who needs special training in English, language of technology. In addition, our project includes our school staff working in the accounting and administrative field because they feel the need to be trained in a European context in order to help our school improve its standards. Our school is asking for a biannual grant aimed at training L2 teachers, CLIL teachers, administrative clerks, teachers for special needs, the ITCmaster to enhance their skills. The 26 participants in the in-service training courses are mostly those who have missed the opportunity of attending previous European training programmes. They will take part in 1/2-week courses accredited by universities in selected schools of Malta, Ireland, Great Britain, France and Spain. Training for L2 teachers will cover cooperative learning, problem solving and task-based activities and will include workshops, seminars and school visits. It will aim at helping participants improve their linguistic, cultural, didactic and methodological knowledge and competences. Great emphasis will be put on technological innovations and the most motivating and modern teaching techniques. The same grant is addressed to the teachers of non-linguistic subjects so that they can both improve their L2 skills and learn CLIL methodology. Our ICTmaster will learn the latest ICT techniques in a stimulating full immersion environment. The teachers for students with special needs will focus their training in emotional intelligence in order to ‘Promote equity, social cohesion and active citizenship’ (ET2020). Our school administrative clerks will keep up with the modern ways of working in the accounting and administrative field. The European dimension of the training programme will facilitate the sharing of knowledge, competences, good practice, and experiences with other European teachers. Our school will benefit from this experience, as it will enhance the trainees’ motivation, skills, competences, and teaching qualities. These, in turn, will ameliorate our school standards and will increase our students’ motivation, their school success, and readiness for looking for jobs within the European boundaries. Finding new ways of interaction and co-operation between L2 and CLIL teachers will be a further advantage. It will be the starting point to modernize our school and to update our school curricula. The project we are submitting has the ambitious goal of placing our school in a new European dimension where our teachers and administrative clerks can benefit from new multicultural and multilingual educational systems.
