The project „Conveyance of democratic values to young people“ is a youth exchange for 24 participants aged between 15-22 (8 per country). The background of this project is based on the difficult political and social situation in Ukraine and in Russia due to the armed conflict in Eastern Ukraine as well as to the authoritarian pressure of the Russian government on democratic forces and the deteriorating economic situation.The multicultural city of Cologne, where we plan to implement our project and where people of over 180 nations have found a home, also has its social problems and flashpoints. All participants have an increased need for more support. Besides, most of them have a migrant or refugee background and come from socially/economically disadvantaged families. Our youth exchange serves the purpose of conveyance of values of peace and democracy, the purpose of respectful interaction with representatives of other cultures as well as the purpose of social responsibility and awareness. The project is daily implemented in the form of thematically focused meetings/workshops/seminars/public performances/excursions. The whole process ist coordinated by the project management and supported by pedagogues. In the course of the project a wide range of tools is developed to support pedagogues in the youth work. The participants are trained to deal with each other in a friendly/peaceful way by manifold pedagogical methods that develop their cognitive/emotional abilities. With the help of the multicultural groups from the three countries a discussion plattform will be built within which the current topics of the project will be dealt with on a universal basis. This approach makes possible to express not only differences but also numerous significant similarities between the views and beliefs of the participants. Another aspect refers to the social environment of the participants and the low degree of objectivity about the currently dominating social situation in their home country as well as in the home countries of other participants connected with it.Urgent social and political topics will be discussed and peaceful solutions will be found on the basis of democratic principles.The project serves the purpose of collecting action-oriented experiences for a peaceful coexistence, establishes a basis for the future-oriented multicultural dialogue and encourages international cooperation in the area of non-formal education.
