Fjordvang Ungdomsskole is a general efterskole (boarding school) which directs the attention for young people, who want to develop professionally, creatively and personally. The school has about 112 students in 9th and 10th grade. 10th grade is divided into three lines: International, Science and Crafts. Fjordvang Ungdomsskole wants to meet students with an open and unprejudiced mind to an equal conversation about life and its possibilities - and difficulties. The school believes in diversity and strives to create an environment characterized by a positive outlook, where trust characterizes the relation, where it is natural to face attitudes and show respect to others, where freedom can flourish in a responsible community, and how participation and responsibility is included in a democratic mindset. The Board and management wish to educate world citizens who can understand what it means to live in the age of globalization, where living together and understanding oneself in a community and where you both locally and globally respect the different traditions, languages, religions, habits and ways of life. To achieve this, it requires that the teachers understand the term world citizen and have a certain level of intercultural competences. The school's new headmaster has extensive experience in international cooperation, and it is this knowledge that the board now wants to use to an increased focus on the school's students to be trained as world citizens, which means that the school's teaching and daily life must allow for the acquisition of cultural competences. The school must educate world citizens based on Peter Kemp's definition of the term world citizen: "World citizen means in our time a citizen who takes today's global problems up to contribute to solutions that can be of benefit to all mankind." The focus of this project is a European dimension, language skills, inspiring new approaches to the individual's education, and common knowledge of how the entire school organization can focus on educating world citizens. The courses, seminars and job shadowing activities should enable teachers to acquire the necessary professional knowledge, German or English vocabulary within each subject, school networks across Europe, and to convey the European dimension to the subjects and to the school. The school management will use the project activities to have the teachers committed to work with a European dimension in subjects as well as in school activities such as how school trips can have a greater focus on the acquisition of intercultural competences.
