Establishing new ties was one of the aims of our school project. So we tried to find English-speaking partners with whom we could maintain a lively exchange of ideas. A contact to teachers with different nationalities was not possible during the ALM course in Galway because the students were all German teachers. Also other efforts to find school partners locally were not successful. So we have looked for a partner with the eTwinning concept and we have found a school in Northern Italy. The idea was to send letters to special occasions and reporting about school live with students. The project should have be done with students in class 6. But the students there were only interested in an e-mail contact and were elder than our sixth graders . Because the German students didn`t have their own e-mail addresses we couldn`t make contact to this school in Northern Italy as well. So we changed our original idea andhave looked for other opportunities to reach a likewise aim. We created mini-courses during the school year. Regarded to the topic “school“ we talked about, we compared school-lives in different countries. We also focused on the English-speaking countries Australia and Canada. Students used the Internet research as well as film- and audiomaterial to find out more about school in other countries. So the students could develop their cognitive abilities and at the end they created a leoprello, which can be shown to the schools “open day“. Furthermore we have had the idea of a module, which combines the subjects Geography, German and English. Our students created a portfolio to “Australia“ with the focus on the skills “How to describe“ and “How to report“. Afterwards they wrote their own reports to different school activities which are published in our school yearbook. In another step our students learnt how to talk about themselves, their school and their freetime activities. Using the website “voki.com“ students created their own avatar and practised with a lot of fun their speaking-skills. The students could improve their English without inhibitions on their own. Also they could improve their knowledge in technology. The topics “London“ and “Scotland“ were also parts of the lessons in class 6. Because of lively communicative activities and materials the students were eagerly willing to get to know more about these areas. The students were really motivated to get in contact with a partner school. So we tried again to find a school from these parts to get a new partnership for our school. But meanwhile we are in contact to a school in France near Paris ("College Jean Racine"). Students from this school learn English as first language and German/Spanish and Italian as second language. Also most of our students have French as second language so we have thought that this could be a good school for our goals. After first contacts between the involved teachers we have made a plan for our partnership. After the beginning of the school year in August/September students will write letters to introduce themselves. Later we will send letters to special occasions and differetn topics, like traditions, freetime activity and media. So we hope for a long-time lively partnership to this school. Also the successful done project to “Australia“ will be implemeted in the curriculum for the next sixth graders. All in all we tried to cultivate a sense of togetherness encompassing tolerance and respect for different cultures during the different topics and class projects. We also focused on the improvement of the cognitive abilities and the raising awareness of our common European heritage.
