Vagalume was a youth exchange promoted by Circolo Arci La Quercia in collaboration with the Drums for Peace network. The project aim was to involve youths within the territory and the members of our association in an international context where they were into contact with different cultures and realities.Our aim was also to foster the use of creative arts as a tool to transform the context where we are living.We chose to focus on sustainability as we believe this is a great challenge of our time and raising the youths’ awareness of this subject can be the real driving force of change.The exchange lasted 8 days, travelling included, and took place in Cinisello Balsamo (MI) from 4th to 11th September 2014.28 youths took part in the exchange, coming from Poland, Portugal, Romania and Italy, supported by 2 group-leaders for each group and had the opportunity to attend circus, music and shadow play workshops, held by artists who work according to the non-formal education method. We worked in groups, using recycled materials and re-interpreting the theme in different artistic manners, with the ultimate goal of playing a free show for the citizens.Our focus on environmental issues is confirmed also by our choice to prefer bicycles and public transport to travel around the town, giving opportunities for outdoor socialisation.With this project we promoted the idea that our town can and must be a place where youths have the broadest range of opportunities to socialise and express themselves.
