Being a group of around forty students, who belong for the most part to the University of Oviedo and who are gathered in the OVIMUN Association, we expect to organize a Model United Nations (OVImun 2016) at the building of the “Junta General del Principado de Asturias”, the seat of the regional parliament, and whose sessions will take place during four or five days of March 2016.The initiative of this MUN was born from our experience as students in the fields of law, politics and international relations, which has taken us to travel to participate in analogous projects, to organize activities related to oratory and even to organise and celebrate our own parliamentary simulations.The project that is presented in these pages aims, in the first place, to bring the functioning of the democratic decision-making organs of the United Nations closer to the youth; secondly, we seek to foster the debate between young people and different political and academic personalities whose decisions affect us on a daily basis; thirdly, we want that young students from other regions and countries get to know our University and the institutions of the Principality of Asturias; finally, we think that it is essential to make possible the participation in our project of students that, for economic or social reasons, haven’t had before the opportunity of developing their talent and interest for international affairs.We hope that between one hundred and one hundred and twenty students from Spain and other European countries will take part in OVImun 2016. Among them, around forty will be those who, in the OVIMUN Association, have taken the initiative of organising the MUN. The others will be university students who share our curiosity and to whom we would like to give the possibility of joining the project; by doing so, we will also reach the necessary number of people for running enough committees and debates.The Model United Nations of the University of Oviedo will offer three kinds of activities. Firstly, interaction of the participants with people responsible of decision-making at a political and academic level, by means of talks in different formats. Secondly, debates between the participants on some of the most sensitive issues of the international agenda, simulating the functioning of some organs of the UN (General Assembly, Economic and Social Council, Security Council, etc.). Thirdly, a “social pack” with a variety of activities that should encourage positive social dynamics. The realisation of OVImun 2016 will go through three well-determined phases. The first one, which takes place between the beginning of January 2016 and the celebration of the Model itself during March 2016, consists in the preparation and organisation of the event. This phase implicates all the members of the OVIMUN Association and, in addition, all those external participants who show their interest and disposition to collaborate. Here we must take all the important decisions in a negotiated way and design precisely the content of the programmed activities, especially in respect to the contact with public figures (i.e. politicians, diplomats, academics) and to the logistics of the future sessions at the parliament of Asturias. The second phase consists in the celebration of the Model itself, through the three kinds of activities mentioned above. Lastly, the third phase corresponds to the evaluation of our project’s impact and its results.In relation to this last aspect, we expect that our parliamentary simulation will become an authentic reference of the academic life in the Principality of Asturias. We hope that the main regional media will talk about the Model United Nations, and that public authorities and, especially, the parliament of Asturias will collaborate, in accordance with the disposition that they have shown until now, in order to make OVImun 2016 much better known in our region and outside it. In addition to this social impact, our MUN will have a really important effect on the academic and human formation of its participants, and will equally enrich the career of the politicians and academics involved, who will have to debate with a very bright and aware segment of the European university population.Beyond the celebration of OVImun 2016 and its direct effects, our project wants to obtain important benefits in the long term. In this way, the Model should help to consolidate a group of students interested by the United Nations and International law at the University of Oviedo, who will be able to continue cooperating in new initiatives. Of course, OVImun 2016 will also clarify to the political and social actors of our region the importance of accomplishing authentic policies for the youth, egalitarian and conciliatory.
