The project Implementing Innovative Approaches to Teaching Practices and Counselling Work was a two-year Erasmus+ project of Gimnazija Vic from Slovenia, which included in-service teacher training and job shadowing by our teachers and counsellors. It stemmed from the school’s vision to constantly try to introduce innovative approaches into our work. With the project we wished to acquire even more quality teachers, who are highly motivated and use new, innovative and creative approaches. We were expanding the European dimension of our teaching practice and upgrading one of our strategic goals – opening the school to the world.
The partner organisations in the project were Liceo scientifico statale France Prešeren from Italy and Åva Gymnasium from Sweden. The cooperation with the former was the result of the networking by one of our teachers, who had taken part in an in-service teacher training as part of the Comenius IST programme. We made contact with the Swedish school when its head teacher was in Slovenia, taking part in the final event of the International Haiku Competition. The partner organisations were responsible for assuring our teachers observed their classes, focusing on new and innovative approaches and methodology.
There were forty-five participants in the project – twenty-two teachers for in-service training, twenty teachers for job shadowing. The majority of the in-service training programmes took place in the United Kingdom, two in Croatia and France.
Before applying for the project, we offered the opportunity to participate to all of our teachers. Eight of them displayed interest. That was why we did not have any criteria for selecting the participants in 2014. As this was a two-year project, we planned to send most teachers to in-service training programmes in 2015. They were selected according to the following criteria: previous in-service training abroad, motivation for training, personal statement, relevance of the programme to the project.
In-service training topics were as follows: using new ICT in the classroom (IWBs, mobile technology, etc.), developing information and media literacy with students, managing stress for teachers, creative and innovative methodology for teachers, innovations in content and language integrated learning (CLIL), neurolinguistic programming (NLP) for teachers, coaching for teachers and school counsellors, dealing with autism and difficult learners for teachers and school counsellors, teaching through multiple intelligences. As some courses were cancelled, we were not able to send teachers to courses on stress management and autism. Upon receiving permission from the national agency, we sent those teachers to other appropriate courses.
The result of the project are highly educated and motivated teachers, who use the newest approaches and the latest content matter in their teaching. We expect our students’ results to improve in the future. In the long term, we would like to additionally expand the European dimension of our work by applying for more European projects.
