Background: develop education in Sustainable DevelopmentThe UN climate change conference in Paris, COP21, and the UN’s 17 new global goals for sustainable development illustrate the importance of international co-operation considering our common responsibility for this matter. Traditionally, the subject has been discussed and developed from the natural science disciplines. Nevertheless, there’s a need to examine it from political, economic and social perspectives as well. The Europe 2020 strategy shows a quest to achieve economic growth through smart growth, resource efficiency and to obtain high employment and social cohesion. Platengymnasiet is located in the municipality of Motala. In its local development program (LUP 2015-2018) the political priority is to work for an innovative and sustainable municipality, which is in accordance with the Europe 2020 strategy. Platengymnasiet is a university-preparatory school with a commitment to prepare students for further studies at college or university. The subject Sustainable Development has a future within research. Platengymnasiet needs to meet that demand. The school needs to develop the subject Sustainable Development in several of its university-preparatory programs. It also needs to establish methods to increase the motivation among its students to pursue their studies and to become aware of the possibilities for further studies and research within the area of sustainable development. The design and purpose of the project:Platengymnasiet wishes to increase the competence in the subject Sustainable Development both among the school management and the teachers. Thus one of the headmasters and two teachers will participate in the conference, NordBio, held in Reykjavik, Iceland, organized by the Nordic Council of Ministers. The objective of Nordbio is to secure a leading role for the Nordic countries in the work with sustainable production, reduce of waste along with the promotion of innovations, green economy and regional development. The project involves academics, scientists, artists, teachers and students from various academic levels. Thanks to this competence-raising activitiy, Platengymnasiet will be able to provide its students with knowledge about international collaborations and global connections and also how to assess courses of events from a Swedish, Nordic, European and global perspective, all according to GY11. As part of the project, the headmaster and teachers will visit the school Fjobrautaskolinn at Armula, in connection with the conference NordBio in Reykjavik. This visit is not included as an activity for this application, but the school is listed as a partner organization, to clarify describe the project's aim, design and impact. The aim with this visit is to plan a common cooperation within the field of sustainable development. The Icelandic school Fjobrautaskolinn at Armula has prior experience of international cooperation and has a well developed system of ICT education. The municipality of Motala has recently started a computer investment where new methods for the use of ICT constitute a further need for Platengymnasiet. The short- and long-term consequences of the project, for Platengymnasiet and for Motala: In short term, the competence-raising activity – the participation in the conference – will be compiled and presented for all members of staff at Platengymnasiet as well as for parts of the management of the municipality of Motala. In long term, Platengymnasiet will plan and develop the field of sustainable development, teaching methods in several subjects and programs, implement an international collaboration with the Icelandic school where the staff at Platengymnasiet wishes to see other nations participating as well.
