University of Wisconsin-Madison Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence

Faculty, staff and students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison wish to establish a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence which will: (1) support scholarship aimed at broadening and deepening knowledge of the European Union and EU Studies in multiple disciplines; (2) promote the acquisition of increasingly specialized research knowledge on the EU, and the EU/US given the primacy of the transatlantic partnership; 3) broaden access to EU specialized knowledge among communities and professionals outside of political science, e.g. law, K-14 teaching certification, public policy; (4) promote understanding of EU/US relations and interdependencies for various interest groups, including civil society; and (5) ensure continued publication of research on the EU. The WISC-EU Jean Monnet Centre will plan a variety of workshops, events, research trips and teaching opportunities, which will enhance the debate and exchange of experiences about the EU and encourage and facilitate research on pressing current events relating to democracy, legitimacy, and representation in the EU; the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership; social policy; and medical technology policy. These events will be developed in the context of the proposed campus visitor programs, for short-term intensive instruction with Marshall-Monnet Scholars-in-Residence, and semester-long courses with a Diplomat-in-Residence, and State Department Official-in-Residence. It will also aid the search for new external partners in other parts of the world by relying on and fortifying the personal and professional networks of faculty, staff and students associated with the Center, e.g. the EU Horizon think-tank for US undergraduates for which Wisconsin has a fledgling chapter. UW-Madison faculty to establish more institutionalized and long-lasting relationships with external partners. Second, the Center will seek external partners and transnational activities through Horizon 20/20 and EU Partnership Instrument (IP).
