United in Diversity ? - Theory and practice of integration work

Loooking at the reality of contemporary Europe it becomes clear that the European motto of "United in Diversity" is becoming a challenge not so much in between nations but within the nation states itself. Numerous factors have led to a situation of increased cultural diversity within the European states, which also leads to new challenges for youth workers regarding the integration of minorities and young people with mirgration backgound as well as the sensitization of the majority population regarding this topic. The seminar "United in Diversity ? - Theory and practice of integration work" therefore wants to bring researcher and youth workers, who are active in the field of integration work together to discuss and share best practices and to explore mutual benefits of a cross-sectoral cooperation. The specific objectives of the seminar are: • To organize an in-depth reflection on the challenges and chances of a culturally diverse society and topics related to the field of youth work and cultural pluralism • To provide a platform for sharing and discussing best practices regarding the integration of young people with migration background and ethnic minorities among youth workers and researchers active in this thematic field • To explore mutual benefits of a cross-sectoral cooperation between the academic and youth work sector in the thematic field of the seminar • To establish a network between participants for future cooperation and to develop follow up projects involving the participation of young people with migration background and ethnic minorities The main activities will consist of research inputs, interactive exercises as well as sessions for the sharing of best practices in this field. The general methodological framework will be based on the approaches and values of non-formal education. The project will result in improved competences of youth workers in designing and implementig projects for their target groups and to contribute to a peaceful coexsistence in cultural pluralistic communities. On a long term it wants to contribute to strenghten the ties between youth workers and researchers for mutual beneficial cooperations.
